Oh Bliss! Bliss and heaven!

I listen to Gamespot's weekly show The Hotspot. It helps me keep up with video game news and its funny. They often go off on vaguely related tangents and make jokes and stuff. Very entertaining. Towards the end, they have segments where they read listener emails and phone calls. There is also a weekly homework assignment for listeners. The best ones are read on the show (which is cool, because they give credit to people, so usually people write their username and/or their name and location on the bottom. For example I write "Chris from Estonia", since "Chris from New York" is kinda booooooring), and a winner is picked, who gets an emblem for their Gamespot account. I do the homework too, not for the emblem, thought I do have one.

I won it for surprisingly. The homework assignment was "worst prequel titles/ideas". I won for Left 4 Dead prequel, Left 3 Dead. It really is the worst. But I am surprised, since if multiple people have the same entry, it gets disqualified.

ANYWAYS, the reason I am giving you this information. On this weekly episode, involved with one of the tangents, as part of a sort of running gag 'if you're from like Estonia, please write in' (the joke usually just involves asking people from obscure places to write in on some issue) and the host of the show in response  said: "Chris from Estonia has written in numerous times. You know he exists."

I totally got randomly mentioned. This is how happy it made me:

 Anyways

So remember when I used to review stuff that wasn't Spongebob? Me neither. But apparently I did that, so here is a review of something.

Since I mentioned video games already, might as well review an awesome game that everybody knows and loves

For the DS

IT is really unique

No, it's not Pokemon: Black/White you silly. It's

(I've decided to join the Amazon referral program thingy. So if something I talk about seems interesting to you and you would like it as well, be it game, movie, etc, and you use Amazon, please use the links I provide, because that would be superspecialawesome.)

*Quick comment before I continue. This title is so long and annoying to search for. Also, after playing the game it is very misleading. Now to the review.

It's less of a game and more of an interactive novel. This means that there is a lot of reading. A LOT. Which I am cool with, since some of my favorite games, which I mention time and time again, are the Ace Attorney and Fire Emblem series which also advance the plot through text. But this goes far beyond the other games.

Blah, blah, blah

I don't want to explain the plot too much, since I still hold the opinion, the less one knows beforehand the better the experience will be. BUT I have to say something as this is a very plot heavy game. You play the game as one of the persons mentioned in the title. It is from his perspective, but the narration of the plot is in 3rd person. It is a ubiquitous narrator, so it says what the main character is thinking. This is a bad comparison, but it is similar to Saw II, which is not a good movie, so let me elaborate. You and eight other people are put in a life-death game. There is possibility of escape, but the group must work together.

This plot offers great opportunity for the exploration of the human psyche and how it reacts to great pressure. Unfortunately it doesn't go in that direction as much as I would have liked, though the characters go through suspicions of maybe one being the villain in disguise and other such paranoia.

The characters are all very well fleshed out. The all have backstory and different personalities. Not to spoil a lot, one may come to a realization at one point that not all of you can escape [I wont go to details as to why], so it got me to wondering who I would leave behind. But the characters are all generally so sympathetic that it would be a very difficult decision. Not all characters are saints though, some characters say/act a but suspicious.

So gameplay. It is a point and click puzzle game, like Myst (which is an awesome game btw). You are stuck in a room and have to find a way out. And that's basically it. Some puzzles were pretty challenging, but not so difficult that I became stuck/frustrated and had to look up the answer. This could be due to my incredible genius though

There are six different endings, depending on some choice you make along the way. I prefer the bad endings. Coincidentally, I got them first. It probably helped that I was playing at night in the dark, but those left me with a truly chilling feeling. When I was reading the final scene of the ending, I was like "NO! That can't be how it ends." Those endings are very impactful. I don't like horror films. At all. But horror games seem cool. The interactivity makes it much more suspenseful. Playing the game, when the scene changes, I wondered what bad is going to happen now!

Game has some eye-candy, too

The true ending, which is supposed to be the correct one, was somewhat disappointing. It got too hocus-pocus-y.

What is the hocus pocus of the end?
Magic? Dinosaurs? Time-travel? Aliens?
Play the game to find out.

Oh, some negatives too:
Could have been more choices along the way and more puzzles. More is always good. As I said, the true ending and most of the game ignored the human psychological examination aspect the premise provides.

If you are a fan of Phoenix Wright or other such Japanese games, definitely play this. For those who don't mind reading and enjoy a good plot, give it a try. If you are illiterate, then how are you even reading my review?!

9/10
Gamespot: 8.5/10 (Critic average: 8.4/10 [out of 11 reviews])
(It came out last year actually, so it won't be on this years top games of the year, but it would have taken a high place on last years)

Well that was lengthy as hell. If only I could put this much effort into my school papers.

Fails of some period of time

There was a Pokemon thing going on, but I was like fuck it. It's kinda hard to explain why some pokes are awesome. So instead I'll post some random pictures that I have taken myself. Original content, homeboy!

I just visited a Gamestop where they had this epic sale:

When you see it...

And for those of you slower viewers:

This looks like a normal US map puzzle right? Teaches kids geography, yay!

WRONG! Upon closer inspection there are two grave errors.

Firstly,

No state capitol for YOU!

And maybe you can find the second thing. (Click the map if you are having trouble. Then you can zoom in 'n such)

My photo collection isn't only of epic fails. But it also includes a win.

In the greatest game of Bananagrams ever played. I won with this as my final standing.

Notice the long-ass word it based on. And who cares that juxtaposition isn't a verb (juxtapose is) and that technically juxtapositioned isn't a word. At that point it doesn't matter. (To fix the problem, move quote to the O at the right of it [U left over] and move the ED and everything attached to it to the end of quack and place the U above the S in juxtaposition, so with very minimal change it is valid).

And for those of you not good at I Spy, here is the second error in the USA puzzle.

Straight trickin' yo!

I don't usually buy games at launch, but when I do, those games are epic. And in this situation, the game was a game that I have actually mentioned before. From the creators of the 2nd greatest franchise of all time, Phoenix Wright:

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective- I won't go into detail, except to say that it was totally worth the day one....well day three purchase. It will most likely contend for best of 2011. I guess it mostly depends on what Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City and Ms. Splosion Man are like.

But I will discuss 2010 in gaming, not so much the industry, but rather my favorite games. I don't play that many new games due to lack of funds. Last year was surprising though, since I did buy multiple new games.

Also, this post may be boring with the lack of pics and videos, but I have still not mastered the art of video capture for games, and though some are also on the PC, I don't feel like going through the trouble of screenshots and videos, so ya...

And here are the best of the best:

1. Comic Jumper: The Adventures of Captain Smiley- Twisted Pixel is officially the greatest game developer. Well, if the Fire Emblem series or Ace Attorney series had a more specific group of people, instead of just Nintendo and Capcom respectively, they'd get the award, but no. Twsited Pixel with The Maw, Spolsion Man, and this.... too awesome.
This is probably the funniest game I have ever played, outright laugh out loud. The gameplay is pretty decent,- a side-scroller where you move with one analog stick, aim and shoot with the other. It was fun, and challenging at points, but really, the reason it is so awesome is the humor. There are four differently designed levels (different types of comics). One of them is the silver age, which is an older type of comic, so there are racist and sexist jokes. How great is that! Plus being completely confused in the Manga world at Hent High lolololololololololo!

10/10 And my favorite game of 2010.

2. Halo: Reach- Halo is an awesome franchise and it got even better. The addition of armor abilities is awesome. Armor Lock FTW! The campaigns story is actually coherent this time, and I can sorta understand whats going on. There was an achievement for beating it on the hardest difficulty on solo, which was actually very tough. But on some of the more difficult parts I was able to be a brave warrior and run away.
The multiplayer is still old Halo- fun as hell. Plus, I am a beast. Bungie went out with a bang

If they only had bots for offline multiplayer......

10/10

3. Plants vs Zombies- Well technically it was first released in 2009, but that was for the PC. The xbox version came out late this year, and since it does add some new things, so it isn't just a port, I decided to include it. Plus I get to actually talk about it. It is  (mostly) a tower defense game where you command a variety of plants and you must defend the house from the zombies. Pretty straightforward. There are also other mini-games that are very fun.
The xbox version added multiplayer, both co-op and competitive. The co-op is stupid, because with another new mechanic, which I don't feel like explaining, it makes the game tooo easy. The competitive seems a bit imbalanced, favoring the zombies, but I didn't play it enough maybe.

I don't deduct from a games score because of difficulty, unless it is ridiculous hard which makes it unplayable, but the only real flaw with this game is that it is too easy. Once you unlock some of the more powerful plants, the later campaign missions are easily beatable. I spend most of my time with endless survival (my record is 50 waves) that gets to be pretty intense eventually. And also other minigames that are "endless" like Vase Breaker and I, Zombie.

Also, the game went Portal style for the end credits, which is always awesome.

10/10

Colossus are awesome

4. Starcraft II- I haven't played the campaign, or the trials, and I'm bad at the main multiplayer game. I'm not an Real-time strategy kinda guy. But I understand why it is considered so great, so I gave it a 10. Trying to be objective here. But that doesn't mean I don't have fun with it. I play the custom games, like Star Battle (2-dimensional space combat.....doesn't actually make sense, but whatevs), Desert Strike (I don't know how to explain it....you build the buildings, and the units spawn at certain intervals), and Nexus Wars which I have renamed Sentry Wars (its like Desert Strike, except it can be won by just building one unit, the Sentry).

10/10
5. Ace Attorny Investigations: Miles Edgeworth- The next installment in the Ace Attorney series. Unfortunately, this doesn't have Phoenix Wright isn't in it, but there are other old characters who make cameos. This game is actually very different. There aren't technically any courtroom scenes, rather you walk around the crime scene and not point-and-click as with the others. You still get to interrogate witnesses 'n junk. Story wise it isn't as great as the others. So it is one of the weakest in this fantastic series, but the new gameplay is quite cool, so it gets bonus points and gets a higher rating than Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice For All.

The humor is still there, the story somewhat, the base gameplay. All in all, it's fantastic

There is a Miles Edgeworth 2 that currently tops the Japanese sales charts, so there is hope for it to come to America, YAY!

8.5/10

Didn't make the top five, but I still want to mention:
Record of Agarest War- First RPG I've played in a while. And man, is it crazy long! I thought I beat the final boss, but nooooooooo. The plot is typical with you trying to rid the world of evil. But if follows through 5 generations and at the end of each generation you choose from 3 women to be your bride, affecting the stats and looks of the offspring. The gameplay is like Final Fantasy Tactics, which gets a bit repetitive after like 10 battles. There are a shit-ton of different monsters; weapons and equipments to forge and find. It's ridiculous. Outside of battles there are events, where you read dialogue, which is something I have no problem with, consdiering I love Fire Emblem and Phoenix Wright games (yes, I mentioned them again) It is very sexed up, which of course is awesome.

And there is one "lady's man" character that traverses the generations (this is possible, because the main hero is human, while the side characters in the party of different races who live longer) and he just generates hilarious dialogue when talking to lady's. Also, the heroes of the 3rd and 4h generation are also hilarious. This game gets a lot of bonus points for visuals.
FF- This got the runner up award on x360a.org for hardest achievement list of 2010.

This game is also getting a prequel or sequel or something later this year. Yay!

8.5/10

Other:

Bioshock 2- Actually, started just recently playing it. The shooting and plasmids have been improved from the first one. The environment is as great as ever. I am still unsure about the story, so that's why I haven't rated it yet. I also haven't really tried the multiplayer outside of one match. But the main things are still there, so considering I gave the first one a 10, this has the potential of a high rating.

Call of Duty: Black Ops-  Didn't play the campaign at all, but the multiplayer was really fun. Not the deathmatch so much, but the other game types.....I feel like I have discussed this before.

And the following games I really haven't played, but I bought them, more so for other people. I don't think they'll get too high of a rating though.

Perfect Dark and Scott Pilgrim vs The World

So with the recent greatest game of the decade thing going on at gamefaqs.com, I thought I'd make my top 10 games of all time list. It was mad difficult, yo!
I picked only one game from my favorite series as to make the list more diverse, because the top 5 would be pretty boring.
And also, one should understand when looking at this list, that I owned as a child, a Sega Genesis, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox 360, Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced and DS (I also had a friend with a Dreamcast). So that is why any NES/SNES games of PlayStation exclusives (well there is one....).

So anyways:

10. Tetris- Well,  it is just a casual-ish puzzle game and that's it. But it is so fun and addictive, plus its one of the all top top selling games, just because it has been around for soooooo long and has had sooooo many iterations. This is sort of a position for any of those first games that popularity, like Pac-Man or Pong, of which Tetris was da best.

9. Pokemon- As great as Pokemon is, it only fits in the number 9 spot. When I started thinking of the greatest games ever, Pokemon didn't immediately come to mind. I think the one real negative aspect is that it so time consuming if you want to beat it 100%. I have been able to catch'em all only in 1 game (crystal version), and it bothers me, that it still required trading. Otherwise it seems to be the only game focused on animal cruelty and "dog-fights". You capture some wild animals and contain them in a ridiculously small space. Then you force them to fight other people's animals, and the winner gets paid straight ca$h, homie. You can also force them to breed and such. But it is fun to try to get them all, being a sort of completionist, in games at least. So when a game with new Pokemon comes out, it is always exciting. Looking forward to white & black.

8. Batman Arkham Asylum- This was a tough decision, as the Metroid Prime games are also amazing, but they fit in the same genre as Batman does. It is one of my more favorite genres, adventure games. It isn't too open, as say Fallout, where you really can do anything, and not advance the plot, or too linear a say Sonic the Hedgehog (just go left to right). There are story missions, which slowly unlock you more accessible areas, and each area is full of somewhat hidden collectibles. The beat-em up combat is pretty simplistic in AA (compared to Metroid Prime), though it does get quite challenging on the hard difficulty, when surrounded by lots of enemies. Also another important part of an advneture game such as these, is the visuals. Both AA and Metroid Prime are gorgeous. And both games both have a good story. It isn't amazing, but it's solid. I probably pick AA over Metroid Prime, because I haven't played the latter in such a long time, maybe if I had the chance to play it again, I'd flip-flop.

7. Portal- This game first came out as part of Valve's The Orange Box, which I disqualified from this list, since it is more of a compilation, than a game in and of itself. Portal is one of the greatest puzzle games, that actually required some cognitive thinking. Also the use of physics-bending Portals. It features the greatest [not from my favorite game series (as not to spoil the number one spot)] villain in all of video games: GLaDOS. She is just hilarious, and a lot of the funniness is dark humor, the best type of comedy. It also features some memoarble things, such as "the cake is a lie" and of course the Weighted Companion Cube, one of the greatest "inanimate objects" of all time. The main problem with the game is that it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short. A lot shorter than that way anyway. So hopefully the upcoming sequel will be able to retain the first game's greatness and just add some length to it.

6. Jet Grind Radio- To be honest, I haven't played this game in forever, but with rumors going around that it might be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade eventually, it rekindled my memories of this fantastic game. It is a cell-shaded (best art style in video games, period. parenthesis) rollerblading game, where you tag stuff (graffiti the walls and such). There are also races and other challenges. But it is a unique genre of games, with a great art style, solid gameplay, and if  I remember correctly, a great soundtrack.

5. Metal Gear Solid 3- Metal Gear Solid is one of the most solid game series. From the first game to the last, all of them are great. But not having a lot of access to a PS1, I wasn't able to play the first one all that much. And also not having access to a PS3 that much,  I have only been able to play about 30 min of MGS4. So that leaves MGS2 and MGS3, both of which I have done multiple playthroughs. And MGS3 wins out, not because of Raiden from MGS2 (he wasn't as bad as people make him out to be), but because of the immersiveness of MGS3. It takes place mainly in a forest, so you have to use camouflage to slip by unnoticed, and eat some animals every once in a while to restore your stamina. It is a lot more stealth focused than MGS4, and the stealth aspect of these games has always been the drawing point for me. The Boss fights are also great, withe memorable characters like The End (who you could beat, by not playing the game for a week, since he is old, and falls asleep and dies or sth. Hilarious) and The Fury.

4. Simpson's Hit & Run- A game that probably won't make it to too many people's top lists. It is basically GTA meets the Simpsons. You can't shoot hookers or anything in this game, but you can carjack someone, then run someone over with your car, and then get out and beat the crap out of old ladies on the street. All the while staying in the Springfield, with its art style and humor. And it is hilarious. 'Nuff said.

3. SSX 3- So one day, long long ago, I decide to rent something from Blockbuster, and the game that got picked was SSX Tricky a snowboarding game, with one of the greatest opening sequences of all time. It was a fairly linear racing game that featured a wide variety of unique characters. It had a white hip-hoper, a supermodel, a psychopath, etc. And as you progressed you earned more stats for speed, air, edging, etc. It kinda reminded me of 1080 Snowboarding for the N64, but it featured insane tricks and stunts. Why not jump of your board in midair and perform a double backflip. or Pull of a 1280 front flip whilst doing the worm? Then a few years later, I discover its sequel and purchase it. And it blew my mind. It retained all the tricks, while adding a few extra, and kept the core characters, with some old one missing, and some new ones. One big addition was the customization- you could change their Über move set and their clothing, which is somewhat unique with each character (with each one having some unique items). And then, instead of linear races, it was an open-world, well more like open-mountain game. BAM! The only open-world snowboarding game in existance, and it is superb. You can race, or go to trick events, where you rack up a high score, or you can just go to the top of the highest peak and go all the way to the bottom of the mountain. Which is about a 30-minute ride. All whilst enjoying one of the greatest video game soundtracks ever, featuring Basement Jaxx, IMA Robot's "A is for Action", and Swollen Member's "Deep End". And the songs had effects: if you are in the air, the vocals, or bass may go away, only to return once you land.
There are also collectibles around the mountain, and some other challenges (like get from point A to B with under 10 sec air time).
Also it looks fantastic.

Anyways, it is very deserving of the number three spot, and I am surprised that this game isn't as well known as the greatness that it is.
(Also you can unlock special characters, like a Yeti, a Robot, or a Cow.....yes, a snowboarding cow).

2. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations- So this is probably a love it/hate it type of game. It is a text based point and click adventure where you are a defense attorney. There is cross-examination and some investigating. So there is a lot of reading.....a lot. But luckily the game is hilarious, and the cases are elaborate and interesting. I pick the third game in the series, since it has a better overarching story relating the early cases with the later ones. You play as Phoenix, who is one of the greatest video games characters ever (especially in the Apollo Justice game, where he is older and more nonchalant). The entire cast of characters is unique and interesting. Featuring some great names, like Sal Monella, Luke Atmey, etc.

The entire series is fantastic, from the first Phoenix Wright, through Apollo Justice and Miles Edgeworth. Really isn't much more to say: unique gameplay, diverse cast, hilarious dialogue, interesting cases.

::drumroll::

And the greatest game ever made is:

1. Fire Emblem- It is a game in the greatest genre, turn-based strategy. That genre is surprisingly lacking any games. There is only civilization and some rpg, though there the turn order is subject to change, and it isn't truly turn-based (and of course some simple puzzle games, but those don't count), and of course the saving grace, the Fire Emblem series.
Due to the lack of release in the US, the first game to be released in the Western world is called just Fire Emblem, but is the seventh in the series, so for clarity, I will call it FE7 from now on.

FE is a turn-based strategy game, with one main difference to such games as Final Fantasy and the lot, that if a character dies in any level, they are actually dead. There is no reviving. It makes the game difficult for perfectionists like me, who don't want a single character to die, so the entire level must be restarted following one characters death. Also, all the characters have a personality, so you don't want them to die. The personality mainly comes out through support conversations. When two characters are standing next to each other when the player's turn ends, they gain a support point. With enough of those, they can have a support conversation, and then of they are within 3 squares of each other, they get stat boosts. Characters can only support with certain other characters, and up to 3 times with one other person. The conversations themselves provide a lot of backstory and depth to the characters, and more often then not, are quite funny. Almost all the characters are interesting, even the bosses, who you mostly meet for just that one level, but even then they all have a personality, from Batta to Glass to Sonia. Then there is even an awesome villain who you don't get to fight (aww, man).

The story is somewhat generic, but the characters are unique enough and there are enough tweaks to the evil-guy-wants-to-take-over-the-world-and-good-guys-must-defeat-him formula to make it interesting.
Why this game over the rest of the series. Well I haven't played FE1-FE5, but as I understand it, they don't have supports, so the characters are a lot blander. We'll skip FE6 for now. FE8 had a much more uninteresting story and cast of characters. Also it was a lot easier. It featured characters promotion customization possibility, though that change was sort of unnecessary. FE9 was back to the greatness of FE7, with an extra bonus of skills. But once of again the characters weren't as interesting (maybe it's just my nostalgia talking there....but w.e), and there was no support viewer. In FE10 anybody can support with anybody, but the conversations are generic. And it had a horrid 4 part structure for its story. But at least it had the FE9 support viewer, which makes sense. And FE11, which is a port of FE1, which was just disgusting. No supports, too many characters, and all of them without personality. I didn't play past the 8th level due to the disappointment. And now FE6. It is as great as FE7, and more difficult, which is good. It lakced a support conversation viewer though. But the main issue is the fact that it was never released in English. I was able to play a ROM of it with translation, but there were glitches/bad translation that ruined the experience. If it were to be properly ported to the US (with a conversation viewer), it might actually be better than FE7.

Also FE7 had side-chapters which could be unlocked by filling certain conditions. FE8-FE10 lacked these. And in FE6 they were required to get to the final boss. And in FE11, you could get to them, if you had less characters in your party, aka you don't recruit them or they die. Why reward failure? Also none of them had Serra, the greatest video game character ever. I wont go into detail about it, one must play the game to grasp her epicness.
That is probably not enough praise for this awesome, awesome game. But I'll stop it there.

So as you can see from the lack of military shooters or racing games,  that I like unique games; games which give an experience that I can't really get from any other game. Also humor is important. As in a movie, if it is too serious it isn't as enjoyable.

In my game of the decade bracket final is Fire Emblem vs Bioshock, because Fire Emblem eliminated the likes of Phoenix Wright, Jet Grind Radio and such. (SSX 3 isn't in the bracket which is shocking to me, because that game, is as specified before, amazing).
